What the Army body fat method is
The Army body fat calculator uses the circumference (tape) equations from Army Regulation 600-9, the Army Body Composition Program. Like the Navy version, the underlying research is the 1984 U.S. Navy report by Hodgdon and Beckett, but the Army fitted its own coefficients and adopted them in AR 600-9. The result is a body fat estimate from tape measurements alone, with no calipers or laboratory equipment.
How the calculation works
The Army equations work in inches and take the log of your circumferences and height. Men use the abdomen measured at the navel; women add the hips:
- Men: %BF = 86.010 × log10(abdomen − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
- Women: %BF = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387

About the official AR 600-9 standards
This tool estimates body fat; it does not judge whether you meet Army standards. The maximum allowable body fat under AR 600-9 varies by age and sex, and the Army has updated those limits and its screening process more than once. For the numbers that officially apply to you, consult the current regulation rather than any calculator.

The result table maps your estimate onto the body fat categories from the American Council on Exercise (ACE), from essential fat through athletes, fitness, average, and obese. Tape technique drives the accuracy here. Measure on bare skin, keep the tape horizontal and snug without denting the skin, and use the same sites every time. A single reading carries noise, so track the trend over several weeks to see a real change rather than measurement drift.
