What the Navy body fat method is
The U.S. Navy circumference method estimates body fat percentage from a handful of tape measurements instead of calipers, underwater weighing, or a DEXA scan. It was developed by Hodgdon and Beckett in a 1984 U.S. Navy technical report and remains the tape test the Navy uses to screen sailors. Its appeal is practicality: a cloth tape and two or three measurements are enough to produce a repeatable number.
How the calculation works
The method uses the log of your circumferences and height. Men rely on the difference between waist and neck; women add the hip measurement:
- Men: %BF = 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log10(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) − 450
- Women: %BF = 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip − neck) + 0.221 × log10(height)) − 450

Reading your result against the ACE categories
The result table uses the body fat categories published by the American Council on Exercise (ACE). They run from essential fat through athletes, fitness, average, and obese, with different cutoffs for men and women. The bands are a rough orientation rather than a diagnosis, and where a healthy figure falls depends on your age, training, and frame.
Measuring well for a reliable number
The formula is only as good as the tape work behind it. Keep the tape horizontal and snug without denting the skin, measure on bare skin after a normal breath out, and record the same sites each time. Because a single reading carries measurement noise, the trend across several weeks tells you more than any one session.
How it compares to other estimates
The Navy tape test tends to agree with a DEXA scan within a few percentage points for people in the middle of the range, and it drifts further at the extremes.
