What FFMI measures
Fat-free mass index (FFMI) answers a question BMI cannot: how much muscle do you carry for your height? It strips out body fat and looks only at lean mass — muscle, bone, organs, and water — scaled to height. That makes it the go-to number for lifters, who routinely score as overweight on BMI while carrying less fat than average.
The measure comes from a 1995 paper by Kouri and colleagues that compared drug-free and steroid-using men. It found that natural lifters clustered below a normalized FFMI of about 25, which is where the popular idea of a natural muscular ceiling comes from.
How FFMI is calculated
This calculator runs two steps:
- Fat-free mass (kg) = weight × (1 − body fat % ÷ 100)
- FFMI = fat-free mass ÷ height (m)²
- Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in m)
The normalization step scales everyone to a 1.8 m reference so a 1.65 m and a 1.95 m lifter can be compared on the same axis. Worked example: an 80 kg man at 15% body fat and 1.80 m tall has 68 kg of fat-free mass, an FFMI of 68 ÷ 1.8² = 21.0, and — being exactly at the reference height — a normalized FFMI of 21.0 as well.
FFMI ranges for men and women
These bands are a rough guide, not medical cutoffs. Women sit about three points below men because they naturally carry less muscle relative to height.

What the natural limit does and does not mean
A normalized FFMI of 25 is a statistical pattern, not a law of physics. Most drug-free men top out below it, but genetics, training age, and measurement error all move the number. Someone with a lean, thick-boned build and years of hard training can reach the mid-24s naturally. Read a high FFMI as a prompt for honest body fat measurement, not proof of anything.
The bigger caveat is the input. If your body fat reading is three points too low, your FFMI reads high by roughly a point. Measure body fat the same way each time — the body fat calculator and a tape are consistent enough to track change.
Using FFMI to guide training
FFMI is most useful as a progress marker. Recalculate it every few months alongside a body fat check, and you can tell whether a bulk actually added lean mass or mostly fat.
