Cycling Calorie Calculator

Estimate how many calories a ride burns from your effort, time, and body weight. Outdoor cycling swings a lot with wind and hills, so treat the figure as a solid estimate.

Outdoor cycling burn varies a lot. Wind, hills, road surface, and drafting behind other riders can swing the real figure well above or below this estimate, since speed alone does not capture how hard you are actually pushing.

A long ride is easy to eat back over the rest of the day. Log your meals in Joules and see whether the numbers still line up.

How this cycling calorie calculator works

The estimate uses MET values for cycling from the Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al.), which rates each effort level by how much energy it costs relative to sitting still. A leisurely ride under 16 km/h sits near 4 MET, a moderate 19 to 22 km/h effort near 8 MET, and racing above 25 km/h near 12 MET. Calories per minute follow the standard ACSM relationship:

A 77 kg (170 lb) rider at a moderate 8 MET burns about 320 calories in 30 minutes. Push to a vigorous 10 MET and the same half hour rises toward 400. Your weight and your effort set the total, and the calculator shows the per-minute rate next to it.

Why outdoor cycling varies so much

Speed is a rough guide to effort on a bike, not a reliable one. At road pace most of your energy goes into pushing air aside, so a headwind, a hill, or tucking into a group can swing the real burn far above or below a speed-based estimate. Two riders holding the same 25 km/h can differ by a wide margin depending on wind and drafting. A stationary bike removes most of that noise, which is why an indoor number is usually steadier than an outdoor one.

Cycling next to other cardio

Cycling is low impact and easy to sustain, which makes it a good high-volume option next to running or the treadmill. For a run measured by distance, the running calorie calculator is the right tool, and the treadmill calorie calculator handles speed and incline indoors. To compare across many activities on the same MET basis, the calories burned calculator covers the full list.

Cycling for weight loss

Riding builds fitness and adds to a deficit, but the arithmetic still favours the kitchen. A pound of fat is roughly 3,500 calories, or several hours of moderate riding, so diet moves the number faster than the pedals. Set a sensible target with the calorie calculator, let rides top up the deficit rather than carry it, and be honest about the appetite a long ride creates.

Preguntas frecuentes

How many calories does cycling burn?

A 70 kg (154 lb) rider at a moderate 19 to 22 km/h burns roughly 290 calories in 30 minutes, while an easy leisure ride burns about 150. Body weight and how hard you push drive the total more than the clock does.

Does cycling faster burn more calories?

Yes, and speed matters more here than in running because air resistance rises steeply as you go quicker. Moving from a moderate pace to a vigorous one can lift the burn by a quarter or more over the same time, since most of the extra effort goes into pushing air aside.

How accurate is a cycling calorie calculator?

It gives a reasonable estimate from your effort and weight, but outdoor cycling burn varies a lot with wind, hills, and drafting behind other riders. A power meter is far more accurate because it measures the work you do directly rather than guessing from speed.

Is a stationary bike as good as outdoor cycling?

For calories, yes, and it is easier to hold a steady effort with no coasting or traffic. A moderate spin sits near 7 MET and a hard session near 10.5, close to the equivalent effort on the road once you strip out the freewheeling downhill.

How does cycling compare to running for calories?

Minute for minute a hard ride and a run land close together, but easy cycling burns less than easy running because coasting costs almost nothing. To compare a run directly, the running calorie calculator works from distance and weight.

Should I eat back the calories I burned cycling?

Be careful here. Long rides build a real appetite and the estimate can run high, so it is easy to eat back more than you burned. Setting a target with the calorie calculator and treating the ride as a small bonus is the more reliable approach.
