What maximum heart rate means

Maximum heart rate is the highest rate your heart can beat during all-out effort, measured in beats per minute. It is largely fixed by your age and genetics. Training makes the heart more efficient at every other intensity, but it does not lift this ceiling. That is why maximum heart rate works as a stable anchor for setting training intensities.

The number matters because most heart-rate training targets are written as a percentage of it. Get the maximum roughly right and your easy, moderate, and hard efforts land where they should.

Tanaka versus the 220 − age formula

For decades the standard estimate was 220 − age, credited to Fox and colleagues in 1971. It is simple, but the fit is loose: it reads high for younger people and low for older adults. In 2001, Tanaka, Monahan, and Seals published a review in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and proposed 208 − 0.7 × age, which follows the age curve more closely.

This calculator uses Tanaka as the headline estimate and shows Fox alongside it. The two agree near age 40 and diverge at the ends of the range. A 25-year-old gets about 191 bpm from Tanaka and 195 from Fox; a 65-year-old gets about 163 from Tanaka and 155 from Fox.

How accurate the estimate is

Any age-based formula describes a population, not a person. Real maximum heart rates scatter around the prediction by roughly 10 to 12 bpm in either direction, so two people the same age can differ by 20 bpm or more. Use the estimate to set sensible starting zones, then adjust from how efforts actually feel and from the heart rates you see in hard sessions.

Does maximum heart rate change as I get fitter?

No. Getting fitter lowers your resting heart rate and raises your VO2 max, but your maximum stays about the same and drifts down slowly with age. As you improve, you cover more ground at the same heart rate rather than pushing the ceiling higher.

What heart rate should I train at?
